about

Tabula rasa is the epistemological notion that people are born without information, without ‘mental content’; they are, in effect a ‘blank slate.’ A play on words, its variant, tubula rasa, is the idea that television begins with a blank screen and visual and aural content is added by those ‘writing on it.’ It was also the name of a cable TV show I co-hosted with Joe Brogan, Fine Arts Director at Dedham High School. This tune was the theme song, and it was the soundtrack to a kind of “Odd Couple” of teacher stiffs—one who wore a suit to bed (Joe) and one who rolled off a couch in yesterday’s sweats (me), heading to the set to videotape a talk show that featured community members, school kids, and sometimes tackled tough subjects, like the Gulf War and the abortion debate. It was current, fun, sometimes slick, sometimes sloppy, but an attempt, nonetheless, to write something down, to fill up that ‘blank slate’ of our most common tool of communications.

lyrics

Tubula Rasa

Woke up this morning and fell out of bed,
I had these crazy thoughts inside my head.
I saw a world where the news was good,
Where most f the people behaved as they should.
I asked my doctor if he saw it, too—
He said:”Tubula Rasa’s got a hold on you.

There’s no prescription, there’s no drug you can take,
It ain’t your brain, it’s your soul that’s awake.
You can turn it on, turn it up, or turn it off at will—
It’s just a different kind of dose of the television pill.
You can’t fight it, you can’t beat it—gotta go with to flow:
Tubula Rasa’s got a hold on yo!

You can see it in the eyes of the young and the old,
The rich and the poor, the shy and the bold.
There ain’t much point in you dustin’ off your broom
When Tubula Rasa’s living in your living room.

No matter what, you can’t run, you can’t hide—
Tubua Rasa’s gonna be by your side
Its pervasive, it permeates your priori,
If you try to shake it, baby—get a new recipe.
So, relax, forget your troubles and take off your shoes—
Tubula Rasa’s gotta hold on youse!
