about

In a dark, sarcastic moment, a friend of mine asked me where he could buy another yellow ribbon decal because his was fading. It was the least he could do, and he was going shopping anyway, so why not pick up another and maybe some extras. Lots of them were fading from the SUV’s wearing them, so maybe he could go around the malls and stick them on other peoples’ cars and save them the trouble. I guess that pretty much sums up the whole business right there. Writer Jedediah Purdy would blanch at this sarcasm, as he decries the popular appeal of irony in American culture in his book For Common Things: Irony, Trust and Commitment in America Today. In irony’s place he encourages us to pursue "the active preservation of things that we must hold in common or, eventually, lose altogether.” For all his home spun wisdom and the galvanizing appeal of the yellow ribbon to assuage our national guilt, I find the things we have in common lacking when we put them to some deeper test, such as the kinds of collective sacrifices we should be making to put this country on a saner path. I believe brave, coherent, common dissent will preserve one implacable truth: All the yellow ribbons in the world cannot justify the unnecessary deaths of this war.

lyrics

This Yellow Ribbon Is Mine

Oh, the ribbon has worn

Can't read the slogan

It's tattered and torn

Can you tell me what was it for?

What happens when a decal just fades?
Do you replace it

Or tear off what remains

And wait for the latest upgrade?

Conflicted I am

Don't know what to do

To do what is right

Is the least I can do

How long will it take?

I don’t have a clue

In a way we're all soldiers in time
And this yellow ribbon is mine.

If you're with me, please honk your horn
A nation of ribbons is where we belong
Please wake me up in the morn’.

We can go shopping

Let's roll the dice

We'll put up with traffic
That's our sacrifice

When corn turns to oil
We'll pay the price
Salvation will come in time
This Yellow Ribbon Is Mine
