This is a song about friendship, written at a time when I needed support to take time off from teaching in order to recollect my musical pursuits and record my first full CD. A lot a people were telling me that I would put myself in a bad financial and vocational position, and it was too risky to walk away from teaching, with all its employment insecurities. My true friends understood and encouraged me to take the time I needed to recompose my life. One thing I discovered was that time is far more important than money, following the fears of the "crowd" were foolish, and that it is hard to do difficult things without people there supporting you.
lyrics
The Sails
If I could have anything I want in this world,
I’d settle for a slice of the truth.
Of all the bad parts I played back in school,
The best one I played was the fool.
With eyes that were closed and lips that were sealed,
I’d follow the crowd to the end.
Pretending to know everybody so well ,
Not knowing that few were my friend,
The few that I knew.
Deliver me from this foolish crowd,
This boat adrift at sea,
For you are the friend who fills the sails,
For you are the friend who still believes in me.
When I met you, I thought, now here is a man
Who dwells in a place so alone.
Armed with conviction, but bound by restriction—
A battle that had to be won.
With a voice like a grin and a patience so thin,
You’d sing with more than your heart.
You have no allegiance to a flag or a notion,
But you still remain true to the part that you lay with your soul.
Deliver me from this foolish crowd,
This boat adrift at sea,
For you are the friend who fills the sails,
For you are the friend who still believes in me.
In an age of such doubt, sometimes I’m paralyzed with fear;
When I look all about I see so few who really care,
And have eyes that really see,
And a heart that really feels ,
And words that profess to know some truth
And something in which to believe…
Something in which to believe.
In a world such as this, we pay the price
When we look too hard for the sun.
For fame and fortune are just thimbles of salt
In the face of a war that is won
With bullets of pride and positions of strength
That eternally keep us apart
From the fruit of our labors and the hope that our neighbors
Will let us inside of their hearts…inside of their hearts.
Deliver me from this foolish crowd,
This boat adrift at sea,
For you are the friend who fills the sails,
For you are the friend who still believes in me.
