Another satire of the immediate world, where top ten lists educate, too many TV channels mean little viewing, radio play is radio pap, posters preen, mirrors dream, certainty battles it out with indecision, and time is but a Guillotine. Influenced by the ‘popcorn’ period of The Kinks (“Mr. Pleasant,” “Wonderboy”), this is an ear worm (my friends say) and can only be removed by exposure to a long bass solo by Jack Bruce from Cream.
lyrics
Short-Sleeved Romeo
I can’t stand it, I abhor it,
I flip through the channels to find some clue
Why I just can’t ignore it,
And even when they can’t get my attention,
I absorb it, gotta store it.
Oh, I can see why a weaker mind like mine
Can’t come to grips with how I spend my time.
I can’t stand it; yet, I adore it.
I rip through the dial and I listen to the rhythm,
Though it bores me; it ignores me.
I dance with myself and pretend
I’m the star on the marquee—
I’m a lackey…
Who mounts the new idols on the bedroom wall
Just to tear them down when a New Age calls—
I have no devotion at all.
I just don’t know what to think,
What to believe anymore;
I just don’t know what to listen to
Or watch or record;
I just don’t know much of anything anymore.
It’s the best thing, it’s the worst thing,
I gotta long list and the gist of the list—
It’s the top ten of anything, it’s all I can read,
‘Cause I only have time for the mainstream
It’s bad dream.
Oh, those who say that a New Age calls
Have got my vote, though I don’t vote at all—
I have no devotion or soul.
I’m in love, but I hate it—
I’ve got every reason in the world to leave,
But I’m staying.
She is packing;
She’s got every reason in the world to stay,
But she’s leaving—
Should I be grieving?
Well, if it all comes down to the beating of a heart,
I’m a short-sleeved Romeo who has to think hard,
But I’d rather sit here and play my guitar—
Nah nah nah nah na nan a nah na nah.
