about

I wrote this song for the DHS Class of 1987, which had a number of students who have become life long friends. The song is about friendship and the metaphor is a bit obvious, but heartfelt. It's always difficult for both teachers and students to say goodbye, especially if they have been members of a class, a club and event, or a community to which both have been engaged.

lyrics

Ladder of Rope

Now the day has arrived
And you look to the skies
You know you should be moving on.
What you see through your eyes
When you try not to cry
Is the chance to really get things done.
You’ve said your goodbyes
Between the telling of lies
And the feelings that you had for some.
But I don’t care how many roads you’ll travel,
I don’t care about the fields you’ll tend,
And I don’t care about the riddles you’ll unravel—
All I want is for us to be friends.

You say you’re not so sure
And you question what it’s for
And you rather would be standing still.
If you walk through that door
Can you enter any more
Are you drawn to someone else’s will?
Well, there’s not much surprise
When you’ve seen paradise
Could you swallow such a bitter pill?
I don’t care about the moods and changes,
And I don’t care about the flowers you’ll send,
I don’t care about your living arrangements—
All I want is for us to be friends.

I’m sure that you wouldn’t trust anybody less kind,
Or you wouldn’t trust what others have sown;
You wouldn’t put out a burning fire,
If that fore was a love that’s grown,
Like you…Oh, like you!

If it’s life that we face
When we try to embrace
Then it’s its love that keeps us going on.
It’s so hard to defend
A life that’s been spent
Trying to do it all alone.
May we always be friends
May we never pretend
It’s too late to ever go back home.
All I care is that you reach above you
And see the world as a latter of rope.
I’ll catch you when you are tired of shaking,
‘Cause as friends, we are friends in hope,
‘Cause as friends, we are friends in hope—
All I want is for us to be friends.
