about

Tongue in cheek, this is about New Age love in a time of old age yearning and tiresome wooing. I always remembered Tennessee Williams' remark that if you are not in love by the time you are 30 (or something) you may never find real love. Not sure that's true, but it's certainly worthy of satire. Anyway, it's an autumnal love song about the clueless immediacy of superficial attractions, but with decidedly wicked intent and ambiguous consequences.

lyrics

It’s a Wonderful Thing (This Thing Called Love)

It’s a wonderful thing, this thing called love,
It’s a wonderful thing to feel your heart go
Skipping along without a care or a clue,
But you better beware of the things it can do.

I met her downtown; she was reading the paper—
The sky was such a blue, it left me still.
It made me think all about this lonely drifter
Who never stopped long enough
To think about what he was feeling,
Or never cared deep enough
To know his heart was reeling…and telling him.

I brushed up beside her and I said I was sorry—
She smiled, so I asker her what was new.
She said something sad about some suffering children—
Her smile disappeared
And I turned my eyes down to the floor;
For a moment I thought
It was the two of us against the world—
Would we live to sing…

That it’s a wonderful thing, this thing called love
It’s a wonderful thing to feel your heart go
Skipping along without a care or a clue
But you better beware of the things it can do.

The autumn wind was cold and she started to shiver,
I asked if she’d like something warm to drink.
In a pub, beside a fire, we sipped hot cocoa—
She talked long and hard
About the great dream that was the 60’s
(Yeah, yeah, yeah).
But I listened with the ears
Of a man who preferred the 50’s
(Do wop dee do wop, meet me at the soda shoppe!).

She invited me back to her place
(Did you wanna…?)—
She thought she met a man
Who would help her put her scrapbook...
…In order to untie her lace
(Did you wanna…?)—
I’d quote Rousseau at length
And pretend to know the meaning of…

This wonderful thing, this thing called love,
It’s a wonderful thing to feel your heart go
Skipping along without a care or a clue,
But you better beware of the things it can do.

Nothing happened, really, I couldn’t play it much safer;
I grabbed my coat, she lit her cigarette.
Before I left, I thought about the lonely drifter—
If I hurried, I could catch him at the station
We could go for a ride;
We could talk about
Politics, religion, the weather, and art—
But not a blessed word about this…

Wonderful thing, this thing called love,
It’s a wonderful thing to feel your heart go
Skipping along without a care or a clue,
But you better beware of the things it can do.
