about

Love is so often desperate and that desperation writhes in slippery contexts that rule out common sense. It overwhelms and misunderstands everything except its own desires. Bernardo Bertolucci’s Last Tango in Paris, starring Marlon Brando and Maria Schneider, had a deep impact on me as a young man, not because of the passion disguised as violence, but because of the anonymity of desire. Love cannot be anonymous; it must be pronounced with a certainty that takes into account its own duality, requited or unrequited. To know love is to know self; to know real love is to know another. This is the only way love can dance.

lyrics

Fandango

I’m down on my luck today,
You are young, I am old and grey,
But we both have so much to say—
Let’s slip away—me and you.

Let’s get out of this highway town,
If we stay it’ll bring us down.
I can’t wait ‘til you come around.
Who cares what the others say?
We’ll do the Last Tango.

There’s nobody in this world
Who wouldn’t do the fandango with you.

If I could give you the world, I would,
But I’m afraid I’d be misunderstood—
Everything could be so damn good,
As long as we tell no lies.

Why is life measured out in time,
We are living on the same straight line,
Getting off shouldn’t be a crime—
Then why are we so scared
To do the Last Tango?

There’s nobody in this world
Who wouldn’t do the fandango with you.

This is no dream, no fantasy scream.
I don’t know anyone but you.

In your eyes, I see beauty there,
A brave heart and a soul that’s fair,
Words and laughter from a mind so clear—
Can you see through to me?

I see doubt streaming down your face,
You don’t think we can run this race;
Walk with me to a better place.

I’ll carry you in my heart,
I’ll hold you in my soul,
I’ll wash you in my tears,
I’ll protect you with my life.
And I’ll do the fandango with you.
