For one brief moment, for just a few months—or was it a few years—when Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, while breathing in the wrath of Lech Walesa, the Polish shipbuilders, and Czech poet, Vaclav Havel, brokered a peace with the West, and suddenly détente, glasnost and perestroika became part of a global vocabulary, I really thought that ‘peace in our time’ was possible. This song was my own narrative of that hope. I feel foolish now, thinking that just a few good men could temper the greed of those who use nations to enrich themselves and war to divide people against each other.
lyrics
Common Star
I’ll bet you never thought that
We would be good neighbors,
I’ll bet you thought that
We would never come to terms,
Me, in this land of song and dance—
I welcome this chance.
You thought that we would
Never come to understand you,
You thought that that we could
Never know of all your fears,
You, in a bounty stretched so far—
We share a common star.
But for the sake of a doubt
We could all live without—
A dark and empty pride
In a world where it collides.
Not for the old an angry voices
That drown out common sense—
There is no hope and glory
When hate can go so far
Especially when we share a common star.
We both dream about a world
Where we could be free,
We both wonder how it feels
To just belong,
We love to win, but in our hearts
We’d rather get along.
Yet, there are those that think
That peace is the dream of children,
And there are those who say
That hope is out of style—
This point can only stretch so far
When you share a common star.
There is no private ocean,
There is no private space,
And all these fingers pointed
Will be cut off in a race,
And no amount of praying
Or wishing in a well
Can ever help to shake
This flag of fury anymore,
Especially when we share a common star.
No, we mustn’t try to shake
This flag of fury anymore
Especially when we share a common star.
