about

Julianne Kelly was a former student of mine who had immense talent as a writer and great potential as a singer. Tragically, she was one of the many who were killed in the terrorist bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 returning home from Europe. Julianne was studying abroad with a number of other Syracuse University students that fall of 1989. They and all other passengers perished on that flight. We had remained friends after she graduated high school and had made a demo recording of a song that featured her words and her voice. While she was studying in England, I had finished the music tracks and we had planned on doing a more rehearsed vocal during that Christmas break after she returned. I'm so used to the frankness and fragility of her "practice" vocal, I don't believe she could have improved on it. I hope the what we've done with her poetry does justice to her memory.

lyrics

1,000 Dreams

1,000 dreams walked through the door tonight
And they all smiled and called me “Darling.”
As I tried to take their orders.

I know just how to charm them, I have read those magazines
So, I return their glances with a smile that’s all routine
And look away… it comes with practice—1,000 dreams.

I know that I am only planting roses in the sand
Like a fool I cultivate the seeds on barren land.

These guys are all the same—I have the right to generalize
They will wink at this young girl as the light catches their wedding rings
And I’ll pretend I didn’t notice because its all the same to me.

1,000 dreams walked through the door tonight
And they all smiled and called me “Darling.”
As I tried to take their orders.

Sometimes I’ll get an offer or get drowned in compliments
For a moment I’ll feel flattered, but it’s all false sentiment
They go home to see their kids, feed the dog, read the box scores
if it wasn’t for the tip, I wouldn’t know the difference
Between what’s bought and what’s sold
But we all pay for the night alone.

1,000 dreams walked through the door tonight
And they all smiled and called me “Darling.”
As I tried to take their orders.
